Other things to do in the area
Walking
The area has good walking for all abilities, from seaside strolls, to hikes high into the hills. It is also an easy drive to some of the most famous mountains in Scotland, including Suilven and it's neighbours in Assynt, Ben Klibreck, Ben More, Arkle, Fionaven and Bens' Hope and Loyal in the North, to mention only a few, although climbing these hills should only be undertaken by the well prepared!
Golf
There are several excellent golf courses within a 25 mile radius of Brora, mostly links courses, with the exception of Bonar Bridge which is situated in a lochside location.
Brora, Golspie, Royal Dornoch, Tain and Bonar Bridge
Mountain biking
As well as plenty of off road mountain biking opportunities in and around the local area, we are fortunate to have the newly built Wildcat Trails, with challenging downhill trails winding down he slopes of Ben Bragghie in nearby Golspie. The Wildcat Trails also offer easier family friendly trails through the local forests. Also within an easy drive are the trails at Bonar Bridge, and Carbisdale - both on the picturesque Kyle of Sutherland.
It may be possible to join any of our trail rides on your mountain bike!
History
The area abounds with local history. The spectacular Dunrobin Castle stands watch over the bay, and further along the coast the ancient Cairn Liath Broch is only one of many that can be found in the hills of the area. There are ancient crannogs on some of the lochs, and mysterious standing stones all standing testiment to the long human habitation of this wild land. Camster Cairns, Hill O'Many Stanes, Whaligoe Steps and Timespan are all within an hours drive North, and to the South, Dornoch and it's cathedral, Carbisdale Castle, theTarbat Discovery Centre and the nearby pictish stones at Hilton, Cadboll and Nigg, to mention only a few of the historical sites around the area.
Fishing
Being on the east coast, means that there are many opportunities for the keen angler. Boat fishing is available from Helmsdale, and there is good beach and rock casting locally. In season fishing is available on the famous local salmon rivers, and boats are available to hire on many local lochs where wild brown trout abound. Fishing for Rainbow trout is also available at Dornoch Lochans.
Canoeing
Locally, Loch Brora is lovely place to explore. Plenty of wildlife, little sandy beaches and a crannog! Within 25 miles, there is Loch Migdale, which is a lovely loch surrounded by woodland - very picturesque, or why not paddle down the River Oykel to the Kyle of Sutherland? There are loads of lochs to explore in the area, rivers and of course there is the sea!
For those who wish to travel a little further afield, the west coast of Sutherlands' sea lochs are well worth exploring.
Surfing
The famous surfing beaches of the North Coast, are about an hours drive away.
Hawking
Highland Hawking Holidays offer courses on falconry, and also if you are a falconer already, you can bring your own birds and dogs! They also have accomodation available.
Geology
The area has a wealth of interesting geological features and within an hours drive is the fabulous North West Highland Geopark, covering huge areas of West Sutherland and Wester Ross, including the stunning hills of Assynt. A good place to start to find out more about the local geology is to visit the Orcadian Stone Company in Golspie, where they have a vast knowledge of geology of the North of Scotland, and indeed the rest of the world. They have a fantastic shop, and also an extremely interesting geological exhibition.
